Born on November 27, 1928, in Buffalo, New York, Sweeney was the eldest of three brothers. He graduated from Canisius High School and Canisius College, followed by St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1954. After completing his internship at Sisters Hospital and Emergency Hospital in Buffalo, he served two years in the United States Navy attached to the Marine Corps in Quantico, Virginia. Sweeney established the first Obstetrics and Gynecology practice in Greece, New York, known as Greece OB Gyn Associates, where he delivered babies and operated at Rochester General Hospital. He retired in 2011, leaving behind a legacy of strong physician-patient relationships.
