Winnie was found as a stray by Needles Animal Shelter and later transferred to Best Friends Pet Adoption Center in West Los Angeles. She quickly became a staff favorite as they got to know her and her adorable personality.
“Winnie is a classic Shar Pei,” a representative from Best Friends Animal Society told The Dodo. “She’s loyal, goofy, and incredibly devoted to her person … While she enjoys attention, she’s not overly demanding and mostly just likes being near her person. Once she bonds with you, she’s truly a ride-or-die companion.”
The staff soon realized that Winnie wasn’t as comfortable with men as she was with women. She was a little more hesitant with the male staff and volunteers and took longer to warm up to them.
“She’s open to building
trust at her own pace, especially with positive interactions,” the representative said. “With patience and proper introductions, she can absolutely make new friends.”
While working with Winnie, one of the male staff members decided to try putting on a wig to see if that changed her perception of him. It’s hard to say if Winnie was actually fooled, but the confusion did calm her down a bit as she tried to figure out what was going on.
The shelter did a cute little video of Winnie and her wigged friend, showcasing how adaptable the pup can be and how hard she’s trying.
“The video was a fun way to showcase that she needs time and patience to warm up,” the representative said.
Winnie is looking for a home with someone who enjoys daily walks, playtime and forming a deep, lifelong bond. She would do best somewhere without young kids or other dogs.
“She bonds closely with her people and does best with a patient, consistent family who respects her boundaries and lets her build trust at her own pace,” the representative said.
