Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains: Indian Railways was gearing up to launch Vande Bharat Sleeper trains in October. It was expected that these trains could start
running before Diwali. Now that both Diwali and October are over, people are wondering about the launch date. The rollout has been delayed as the second rake is still in the final stages of production, with work ongoing on the interiors. The Railway Board has given in-principle approval for the operation of the 16-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper rake, but it has also asked for corrections in several areas before the train can start passenger service.
Vande Bharat Sleeper trains launch delayed; know the reason
In a communication sent to the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and all railway zones, the Board pointed out concerns regarding furnishing quality, design, and overall workmanship. Specific issues highlighted include:
- Sharp corners and edges in the berthing area
- Improperly designed window curtain handles
- "Pigeon pockets" between berth connectors could make cleaning and maintenance difficult
Furnishing quality issue led to the Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains delay?
During trial runs, the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS) noted similar issues and communicated them to RDSO. According to a PTI report, RDSO later submitted an updated compliance report on September 1, 2025.
Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains: Key safety measures
The Ministry of Railways has emphasised that all upcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper trains must fully comply with operational and safety standards, including:
- Implementing comprehensive fire safety measures
- Integrating Kavach 4.0, India’s indigenous train collision avoidance system
- Installing reliable communication systems connecting loco pilots, train managers, and station masters
- Ensuring proper inspection and maintenance of all brake systems

The Ministry has also instructed all railway zones to train loco pilots to disconnect the semi-permanent coupler within 15 minutes during emergencies, with the necessary tools provided in driver and guard kits.
Plus, zones have been asked to ensure the presence of trained technical teams capable of handling mechanical issues and emergencies en route, to ensure safe and smooth operations once the Vande Bharat Sleeper begins service.
