7 New Bullet Train Corridors in India: India is preparing for a major leap in high-speed rail connectivity with plans to develop seven new bullet train
corridors that could significantly reduce travel time between key economic and population centres. Announced in the Union Budget 2026-27, the proposed high-speed rail network is expected to span nearly 4,000 kilometres and form the backbone of the country's next-generation transportation infrastructure. The project comes as construction progresses on India's first bullet train corridor between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, which is currently under development.
7 New Bullet Train Corridors in India - Route
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced seven new high-speed rail corridors in Budget 2026, describing them as "growth connectors" aimed at promoting faster and environmentally sustainable passenger transport.
- Mumbai – Pune
- Pune – Hyderabad
- Hyderabad – Bengaluru
- Hyderabad – Chennai
- Chennai – Bengaluru
- Delhi – Varanasi
- Varanasi – Siliguri
The Railway Board has also directed the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) to prepare detailed project reports (DPRs) for these corridors.
7 New Bullet Train Corridors in India - Travel times could be cut
The corridors could drastically reduce travel durations between major cities.
- Mumbai to Pune in about 48 minutes
- Pune to Hyderabad in around 1 hour 55 minutes
- Hyderabad to Bengaluru in nearly 2 hours
- Hyderabad to Chennai in about 2 hours 55 minutes
- Chennai to Bengaluru in roughly 1 hour 13 minutes
- Delhi to Varanasi in around 3 hours 50 minutes
- Varanasi to Siliguri in about 2 hours 55 minutes
Southern India emerges as a key beneficiary
A notable feature of the proposed network is the concentration of corridors in southern India. The Hyderabad-Bengaluru, Hyderabad-Chennai and Chennai-Bengaluru routes could create a high-speed transportation grid connecting some of India's largest technology, manufacturing and services hubs.
Infrastructure experts believe such connectivity could strengthen economic integration across the region while improving labour mobility and business travel.
Delhi-Varanasi and Varanasi-Siliguri to strengthen eastern connectivity
The Delhi-Varanasi and Varanasi-Siliguri corridors are expected to enhance connectivity between northern and eastern India. The Varanasi-Siliguri route, in particular, could improve access to eastern states and serve as a gateway towards the Northeast region.
Rs 16 lakh crore investment plan
The seven proposed bullet train corridors are estimated to require investments of around Rs 16 lakh crore. Indian Railways is currently refining plans and updating DPRs to arrive at more accurate cost estimates before execution begins.
