What's Happening?
The Oklahoma City Museum of Art (OKCMOA) is currently hosting a new exhibition titled 'The Triumph of Nature: Art Nouveau from the Chrysler Museum of Art.' This exhibition, which runs until January 24th,
2027, showcases the Art Nouveau movement of the late 19th century, emphasizing its application in functional and decorative arts rather than traditional paintings or sculptures. According to exhibit curator Dr. Lloyd DeWitt, the movement's primary impact was in beautifying everyday items such as furniture, interiors, architecture, glassware, and tableware. The collection features pieces from Walter Chrysler Jr.'s extensive Art Nouveau collection, highlighting the variety from teapots and plant holders to clocks and vases. Significant components include glassware by Louis Comfort Tiffany and printmaking by Alphonse Mucha, as well as a panel from the entrance of the Paris Metro. The exhibition also explores the movement's inspiration from Eastern artworks, particularly after Japan opened to global trade in the 1850s, influencing the expressive forms and natural motifs characteristic of Art Nouveau.
Why It's Important?
This exhibition is important as it offers a comprehensive look at the Art Nouveau movement, which transformed public design and everyday objects for several years. By focusing on decorative arts, the OKCMOA highlights how art can be integrated into daily life, challenging the traditional view of art confined to canvases and sculptures. The display of functional items like cabinets, candlesticks, and rocking chairs demonstrates the movement's goal of 'beautifying your entire life,' as noted by Dr. DeWitt. The exhibition also underscores the global influences on art, particularly the impact of Japanese aesthetics on Western design during that period. For visitors, it provides an opportunity to appreciate the intricate craftsmanship and natural beauty that defined an era, offering a contrast to contemporary minimalist design trends. The inclusion of pieces from a renowned collection like Chrysler's ensures a high-quality and historically significant presentation.
What's Next?
The exhibition 'The Triumph of Nature: Art Nouveau from the Chrysler Museum of Art' will continue to be on display at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art until January 24th, 2027. Following its run, the pieces will likely return to the Chrysler Museum of Art or potentially move to other institutions for further exhibitions, depending on their touring schedule. The OKCMOA will continue its programming, likely featuring other historical or contemporary art movements. The exhibition's success may influence future curatorial decisions at the museum, potentially leading to more shows that explore the intersection of art and functional design. Art enthusiasts and the general public have several months to visit and engage with the unique aesthetic of Art Nouveau, which could foster renewed interest in the decorative arts and historical design periods.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond the immediate display of beautiful objects, 'The Triumph of Nature' exhibition delves into the broader cultural and historical context of the Art Nouveau movement. It illustrates how geopolitical events, such as the opening of Japan to global trade, profoundly influenced artistic styles in the West. The exhibition also subtly narrates the transition from Art Nouveau's luxurious and nature-inspired forms to the more industrial and stark aesthetics of Art Deco, a shift largely catalyzed by the First World War. Dr. DeWitt explains that the war made the 'costly art' of Art Nouveau seem irrelevant, leading to an embrace of more industrial styles. This highlights how major global events can dramatically alter artistic sensibilities and public taste, moving from an 'escapist and self-indulgent' beauty to a more practical and modern approach. The exhibition thus serves as a historical marker, reflecting societal values and technological advancements of its time.
