What is the story about?
Government sources have indicated that a bilateral meeting between Indian and Chinese Trade Ministers on the sidelines of upcoming BRICS summit in New Delhi on 12th and 13th September.
Sources added that several issues are likely to figure in discussions during the courtesy meet between India's Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and China's Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao.
Piyush Goyal said that many trade ministers are slated to come for the BRICS summit, and the calender for meetings is yet to be decided.
Though trade volumes have grown exponentially between India and China, they have also led to the biggest single trade deficit India is running with any country.
Apart from the size of the deficit, the imbalance has continuously been widening year after year to reach $112.16 billion in 2025-2026.
India's predominant exports over the last 5 years have consisted of iron ore, Light naphtha, p-xylene, shrimps and castor oil.
Over time, these raw material-based commodities have been over-shadowed by Chinese exports of machineries, electronics, personal computers, Monolithic integrated circuits, parts of telephonic/telegraphic equipment, lithium-ion, fertilizers.
Both the sides are in continuous engagement to address market access issues.
According to DPIIT data, India’s cumulative Foreign Direct Investment into China till December 2025 (since April 2000) is $2.51 billion, while cumulative Chinese investments to India till 2024 (since 2015) are $2.5 billion.
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) of Rs. 4,895 crores has been reported from 29 companies, a little over 3.5 months after investment norms were eased into automatic route for companies from non-land border countries (LBCs), as per government sources.
Investors with non-controlling LBC ownership of up to 10% can invest through the automatic route, subject to the applicable sectoral caps, entry routes and other conditions. The investor entity can proceed with the investment without any other approval after reporting the relevant information to the Government.
