Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said that India is exploring the possibility of UAE becoming a more important source of LPG and LNG, as he cited continuing global uncertainty after the COVID pandemic due to the Russia-Ukraine war and the ongoing West Asia crisis.
Projecting a "significant ramp up of investments from UAE" to "expand strategic Petroleum reserves in India, the Minister said that a study is underway to look at sub-sea pipelines to transport and store gas for more energy resilience and security.
The UAE was India's 2nd largest oil supplier in August 2026, at 0.62 million barrels per day.
Addressing the media in Mumbai, after co-chairing 14th meeting of the India-UAE high-level Joint Task Force on Investments with Managing Director of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Minister said that six areas of cooperation had been identified: ship ownership, development of model ports manufacturing of ships, repair and maintenance of ships, shipbreaking and container management.
Noting that both countries are looking for a more structured and formal working group to increase cooperation in the shipping sector, he pointed out that India's port capacity has doubled in the last decade, describing the UAE as a trusted investor to be able to again double Indian port capacity in the next decade.
Stating that a dialogue is underway between India and the UAE to deepen cooperation in shipping, space and civil aviation sector, he termed the large Indian diaspora in the West Asian country as the backbone of the partnership.
