US-Iran War: CENTCOM says strikes hit IRGC targets; Trump claims ‘almost total control’ of Hormuz

The US military said it carried out a wave of strikes against Iranian military targets on September 1, escalating tensions with Tehran amid a standoff over the Strait of Hormuz.

US Central Command said its forces struck Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targets, including air defence sites, radar systems, maritime assets and facilities, mine-laying capabilities and communications sites.

In a post, CENTCOM said, "The strikes follow recent attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial shipping in the Strait

of Hormuz and against American service members.”

CENTCOM said the strikes followed attempted IRGC attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and against US service members. More than 50,000 US troops are currently operating across the Gulf region, it added.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump claimed Washington now has “almost total control” of the Strait of Hormuz and claimed Iran's economy was “totally collapsing”. He also called on Iranians to “rise up and fight” against their government.

Iran retaliated with strikes on US assets in Jordan, Bahrain and Iraq, according to Reuters. Tehran has also warned it will prevent oil exports from the Gulf.

Separately, the Iranian Red Crescent said five people were killed and 50 wounded in a wedding near Sirik, on the Strait of Hormuz.
