US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, on Saturday, said that the United States does not know if Russia is serious about ending the war in Ukraine, while adding that Washington has secured India’s commitment to stop buying additional Russian oil.
Rubio, while speaking on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Germany, said, “We don't know if the Russians are serious about ending the war.”
He said Russia has stated it is willing to end the conflict, but questions remain over the terms and whether they would be acceptable to Ukraine.
Rubio said the United States will continue testing whether a settlement acceptable to both Ukraine and Russia is possible.
He said the US has imposed additional sanctions on Russia’s oil and that, in talks with India, Washington has “gotten their commitment to stop buying additional Russian oil.”
He added that Europe has also taken steps and that US military support for Ukraine continues.
“Nothing has stopped,” he said, adding that there is no pause in pressure on Russia.
Rubio said military officials from both sides met last week at a technical level and more meetings are expected.
He said the US will continue efforts to help bring the war to an end through a negotiated settlement that is “just and sustainable.”
