The Ministry of External Affairs on Sunday, January 4, said that recent developments in Venezuela are a matter of deep concern and that India is closely monitoring the evolving situation.
The ministry reaffirmed
India’s support for the well-being and safety of the people of Venezuela and called upon all concerned parties to resolve issues peacefully through dialogue, in the interest of maintaining peace and stability in the region.
The MEA said the Embassy of India in Caracas is in contact with members of the Indian community and will continue to extend all possible assistance.
Separately, India on Saturday night (January 3) advised its nationals to avoid all non-essential travel to Venezuela in view of the situation following the capture of the oil-rich nation’s president by the United States. The ministry also urged Indians currently in Venezuela to exercise extreme caution and restrict their movements.
According to US President Donald Trump, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was captured during a large-scale US operation in the capital city of Caracas. The US action has triggered political uncertainty in the South American country, with several major powers, including Russia and China, criticising Washington over the operation and the detention of Maduro and his wife.
The MEA has asked Indian nationals in Venezuela to contact the Indian Embassy in Caracas for assistance via phone at +58-412-9584288, which is also available for WhatsApp calls, or through email. Official estimates indicate there are around 50 Non-Resident Indians and about 30 Persons of Indian Origin currently residing in Venezuela.
