The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) recorded a 6.7 magnitude earthquake off the cost of Sanriku on 5:03 pm local Japanese time.
The depth of the epicentre was estimated to be 10 km below the earth's surface.
Tsunami warning was issued for Iwate Prefecture following the tremors.
According to the JMA, at least nine tremors have followed after the massive earthquake, including a 6.3 magnitude earthquake recorded at 5:54 pm Japanese local time.
No damage has been reported as of yet. People have been advised to remain away from the coastal areas.
