What is the story about?
Hunter Biden is stepping into the world of cryptocurrency with a new meme coin that has already garnered attention for its unusual name. The former US president’s son is reportedly preparing to launch a token called $LAPTOP, a clear reference to the laptop controversy that has followed him for years.
According to a Wall Street Journal report, Hunter Biden and the other founders of $LAPTOP will keep 30% of the one billion tokens. These tokens will be locked for six months, so the founders cannot sell them during that period. The tokens will then be released gradually.
Another 20% of the total tokens will be given out in two rounds. Some will go to people who lost money on $TRUMP, Donald Trump’s meme coin. Others will be offered to people who subscribe to Hunter Biden’s Substack and those on a mailing list managed by his friend and video journalist Andrew Callaghan.
The coin is expected to launch on September 9 through Base, the blockchain network created by US crypto exchange Coinbase.
Hunter Biden hinted about the project by sharing a short video showing news outlets and Donald Trump mentioning his laptop.
Soon after Hunter Biden shared the video about $LAPTOP, Andrew Callaghan made it clear that he and Channel 5 were not involved with the meme coin.
In a statement issued on Instagram, Callaghan wrote, “Channel 5 and I have nothing to do with Hunter Biden's crypto coin. We have not, do not, and never will advertise crypto. Hunter asked if he could use our mailing list whenever he launched a new product. We provided him a simple csv sheet from our email list to help him expand his audience. As we have told our followers numerous times, we do not believe crypto is a legitimate investment. We wish Hunter the best, shout out to the homie.”
People familiar with the project said the founders have also planned a way to reduce the total number of $LAPTOP tokens. Up to 30% of the tokens might be destroyed if certain events happen within a certain period.
These events include a Democrat winning the 2028 US presidential election, Bitcoin reaching a new record price and $LAPTOP becoming more valuable than $TRUMP.
If these events do not happen as planned, the related tokens will be given to charity. The remaining 20% of the tokens will also be used for charity.
Some of this supply will also go to the organisation behind $LAPTOP for legal work, accounting, administration and compliance.
