What is the story about?
The White House announced the formation of the ‘Board of Peace’ to oversee the reconstruction and transitional governance of Gaza. Chaired by US President Donald Trump, the establishment of the board is a critical step to demilitarise and reconstruct the enclave, which was devastated by a two-year war between Israel and Hamas.
The seven-member board also includes Indian-origin World Bank Group President Ajay Banga. In the Gaza Peace Board, he serves alongside other global figures, including Secretary Marco Rubio, Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, Sir Tony Blair, Marc Rowan and Robert Gabriel.
Who is Ajay Banga?
Ajay Banga, who is one of seven founding executive members, is the 14th President of the World Bank Group. Banga was nominated to lead the World Bank by former US President Joe Biden in February 2023 and began his five-year term on June 2, 2023.
He is the first person of South Asian descent to lead the World Bank. He stepped into the role “to transform the 80-year-old institution into a faster, more efficient, and more impactful partner in development,” according to the World Bank Group's official website.
He has had a long career spanning more than four decades in a variety of sectors, including consumer products, finance, banking and technology.

Banga most recently served as president and CEO of Mastercard and vice chairman of a private equity firm, General Atlantic, as per Investopedia.
As per a report in ANI, he also served as a member of President Obama's Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity.
Ajay Banga has received numerous honours for his contributions to global business and development. He received the Foreign Policy Association Medal in 2012, the Padma Shri Award in 2016, the Ellis Island Medal of Honor and the Business Council for International Understanding's Global Leadership Award in 2019, as well as the Distinguished Friends of Singapore Public Service Star.
Banga was born in Khadki, a small town in Maharashtra, in 1959 to a Sikh family.
In 1981, he completed his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in economics from St. Stephen’s College in Delhi. Banga also holds a post-graduate degree in Management from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.
