A planned meeting in Oman between Iran and multiple Gulf Arab countries to discuss possible agreements on the Strait of Hormuz has been postponed. The meeting, which was scheduled for Monday, was postponed “in the interests of consensus”, Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi said on X.
He added that Oman remained committed to promoting dialogue aimed at ensuring stability and long-term cooperation in the region.
Iranian media also reported that some regional countries requested the postponement. Iran’s Fars news agency reported on Sunday, citing a senior official from the foreign ministry’s Gulf affairs office, that the meeting was postponed “at the request of some countries in the region and was a joint decision by Tehran and Muscat”.
According to Iranian officials, they would decide a new date for the meeting in coordination with Oman, Reuters reported.
No Breakthrough On Hormuz
The talks were expected to focus on shipping arrangements through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy transit routes. Before the conflict, around a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas supplies passed through the waterway.
Oman has emerged as a key mediator and proposed a regional mechanism to manage navigation through the strait, according to Al Jazeera. However, the discussions have so far failed to produce a breakthrough, with Iran maintaining that the waterway will not reopen until its demands are met.
Fresh Attacks Raise Shipping Concerns
The postponement came amid renewed attacks and growing concerns over the safety of vessels in the region. The UK Maritime Trade Operations said a vessel had been hit by a projectile while passing through the Strait of Hormuz, triggering a fire and forcing the evacuation of its crew.
Iran separately reported that one person was killed and four crew members were injured after an Iranian commercial vessel was struck off its coast. It was not immediately clear whether the two reports referred to the same incident.
Oil Supply Fears Grow
Concerns over global energy supplies have also intensified after Houthi attacks forced Saudi Arabia to shut down its key east-west oil pipeline over the weekend. The pipeline is an important route for transporting oil while bypassing the Strait of Hormuz.
Oil prices rose sharply amid fears of further supply disruptions. Shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz also dropped significantly, according to preliminary ship-tracking data.
Saudi oil buyers and traders said the kingdom's oil stocks at its Red Sea port of Yanbu could support exports for only five to seven days if the pipeline remains shut, according to Reuters.
Houthi Attacks Continue
Meanwhile, Houthi attacks continued in Saudi Arabia, with state media releasing footage showing damage to homes and a mosque in Jazan province. The Iran-aligned group also claimed to have targeted a Saudi military base.
The Houthi attacks have left Gulf states facing a difficult choice between accepting growing economic pressure and engaging with Iran, as efforts to ease regional tensions continue.
