The UK is pursuing with talks to sell warships to Denmark as tensions escalate fast in US President Donald Trump's efforts to take over Greenland, with France also vying for a deal.
UK Defence Secretary John Healey is set to meet Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen in Copenhagen on Wednesday (January 21) to discuss a potential deal for Britain’s Type 31 frigates, according to Bloomberg.
Britain isn’t alone in the race. France has stepped up its lobbying efforts, having sent a Naval Group frigate
to Copenhagen this week. The visit included tours for Danish lawmakers, business leaders, and the country’s business minister.
The backdrop to these defence talks is a growing rift in transatlantic relations. Trump has threatened to impose a 10 % tariff on imports from eight European countries including the UK, Denmark, France and Germany starting February 1.
He remarked that he will "100%" carry out the tariffs for not supporting his Greenland. Trump believes the US should be allowed to buy Greenland from Denmark which has heightened diplomatic and trade tensions with NATO allies.
