What is the story about?
The US Federal Reserve is holding its first Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) of 2026. The meeting that started on January 27 will conclude on January 28 (Wednesday). After this crucial meeting, the US Fed Chair, Jerome Powell, will deliver his address in which he will announce the decision of the Fed on the benchmark interest rate.
The current interest rate stands at 3.5-3.75%. In December, when the last FOMC meeting was held, Powell announced a cut of 25 basis points in interest rates.
Where To Watch It?
The FOMC meeting that started on January 27 will conclude on January 28.
The policy statement will be announced by Fed Chair Powell at 14:00 hours Eastern Time on January 28. Powell's address will be live at 12:30 hours on January 29, as per Indian Standard Time.
The press address after the FOMC meeting will be streamed live on the Federal Reserve's social media platforms, including X on @federalreserve and or the Fed's YouTube page.
In addition, the Fed speech will also be available on CNBC-TV18's platforms as well.
What To Expect?
This FOMC meeting comes at a crucial time, as the US Fed, shepherded by Powell, remains under pressure from the Trump Administration to precipitously cut interest rates. As per reports, the Fed is expected to retain the interest rate at 3.5-3.75%, with no new policy projections expected.
While Powell's tenure as the head of the most influential central banking system in the world ends in May 2026, and therefore he has two more FOMC meetings in March and April, the outcome of this meeting and President Trump's reaction remain to be seen.
Donald Trump has repeatedly flirted with the idea of firing Powell, who still has time on the Fed as governor until 2028.
The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) consists of twelve members—the seven members of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and four of the remaining eleven Reserve Bank presidents.
Why It Matters?
This would be the first FOMC meeting since the Trump administration's Department of Justice initiated an investigation into Powell over irregularities in the construction work at the Fed headquarters.
The US inflation rate for December stood at 2.7%, which, while lower than expected, is still above the Fed's target of 2%.
Furthermore, in December, the unemployment rate dropped to 4.4% as job creation remained sluggish. Consumer spending and robust economic development were the primary drivers of this. And most importantly, what happened at the US Fed has ripple effects across the board and impacts markets around the globe.
