At least 10 tremors jolted Japan within two hours after a massive earthquake of 6.7 magnitude struck its northern coast on Sunday, November 9. The Japanese authorities issued tsunami warning, advising people to remain cautious while incidents of power shortage also reported in some areas.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) recorded a 6.7 magnitude earthquake off the cost of Sanriku at 5:03 pm local Japanese time. The depth of the epicentre was estimated to be 10 km below the earth's surface.
The powerful earthquake triggered a series of tremors ranging between 4.7 and 6.3 magnitude on the Richter Scale, as per the JMA.
At least 10 such tremors have struck Japan since 5 pm, till the time of writing this report.
Tsunami warnings issued
Tsunami warning of up to 1 metre was issued along the coastal Japanese region following the tremors, according to the agency.
No damage has been reported as of yet. However, people have been advised to remain away from the coastal areas, news agency The Associated Press (AP) reported, citing Japanese public broadcaster NHK.
Meanwhile, two 20-cm tsunami were observed in Kuji Port in Iwate Prefecture at 5:52 pm, and in Ofunato Port at 6:25 pm. A 10-cm was observed in Miyako Port at 6:14 pm, while another 10-cm tsunami was recorded in Kamaishi port at 5:37 pm, reported The Japan Times.
The Ofunato city administration has issued an evacuation advisory for over 6,138 people.
Railway operations affected
East Japan Railway stated that the Tohoku Shinkansen had lost power for a short duration leading to temporary suspension of operations between Shin-Aomori and Sendai railway stations, as per the Japan Times.
No abnormalities at the nuclear power plants have been reported so far.
PM Takaichi urges caution
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi also advised the people in the region to evacuate as more tremors are expected to follow.
"A tsunami advisory has been issued, so please evacuate away from the coast immediately. The tsunami that may arrive later could be larger than expected, so please stay alert for further information," a translation of Takaichi's message in Japanese in a post on X (formerly Twitter) read.
"Additionally, aftershocks are possible, so please remain cautious of any strong shaking," she added.
