Massive flash floods along the Nepal-Tibet border have killed at least 160 people and left hundreds missing, including tourists, pilgrims and workers, after a torrent of water, mud and rock tore through settlements, roads and hydropower projects on Wednesday.

Police said at least 157 bodies had been recovered in Nepal, while Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported three deaths and 265 people missing in Tibet's Gyirong County. Rescue operations remain under way, but collapsed bridges, destroyed roads and thick layers of debris have made it difficult for emergency teams to reach some of the worst-hit areas.

The devastating disaster was likely triggered when part of a glacier collapsed, sending an avalanche of ice and rock into the valley and unleashing the flood. The scale of the destruction has renewed concerns over the growing threat from glacial hazards in the rapidly warming Himalayan region.

Indian states downstream of Nepal have also stepped up surveillance amid fears of rising river levels. In Bihar, the Muzaffarpur administration has been placed on alert over a possible surge in the Gandak. District Magistrate Kumar Gaurav and SSP Kantesh Kumar Mishra inspected embankments and flood-control gates in areas connected to the river and ordered round-the-clock monitoring.
