What is the story about?
The United States will deploy military aircraft to Greenland's Pituffik Space Base, as tensions rise over President Donald Trump's push to gain control of the self-governing Danish territory.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said on Monday (January 19) that its aircraft will soon arrive at the US military base in Greenland as part of "long-planned" activities.
NORAD, a joint US-Canada military command responsible for aerospace defence, said the deployment is aimed at strengthening defence cooperation. It did not provide details on the specific nature of the activities.
The organisation said the operations have been coordinated with Denmark and that Greenland has been informed.
According to NORAD, the aircraft will operate alongside forces from bases in the continental United States and Canada.
"These aircraft will support various long-planned NORAD activities, building on the enduring defence cooperation between the United States and Canada, as well as the Kingdom of Denmark," the statement said.
NORAD added that it routinely conducts sustained and dispersed operations to defend North America.
The deployment comes amid heightened tensions following Trump's repeated remarks about taking control of Greenland "one way or the other," raising concerns among US allies in Europe.
Over the weekend, Trump also threatened to impose new tariffs on countries opposing his plans for the Arctic island. His comments followed the arrival of small military delegations from several European nations in Greenland for a military exercise, which the United States was also invited to attend.
Denmark has proposed that NATO expand surveillance operations in Greenland to address growing security concerns in the region.
