What is the story about?
The United States has indicated that it is close to achieving its strategic objectives of initiating a unilateral war on Iran, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggesting the conflict could wind down in the coming weeks.
In a conversation with Sean Hannity on Fox News, Rubio claimed that key elements ofIran’s military capabilities, including its navy and air force, have been largely neutralised. He also noted that a significant portion of Iran’s missile launch systems and drone manufacturing infrastructure has been targeted.
"We are going to destroy their air force. We have largely done that. We were going to destroy their navy, and we have largely achieved that. We were going to destroy a significant percentage of their missile launchers. We are well on our way to achieving that,” he said.
Speaking in the interview, Rubio said the US is “on or ahead of schedule” in meeting its military goals and is approaching the final phase of operations. He added that while the end is not immediate, the situation is moving steadily towards completion.
“We’re going to get to the point where our military will have achieved all of its objectives in this mission, and they are doing so with extraordinary efficiency,” he added.
Rubio confirmed that the US is exchanging messages with Iran and stated there is "potential for a direct meeting at some point." However, he added that President Trump will not allow "fake negotiations to be used as a delay tactic, to buy more time".
While he refuses to give a timetable, Rubio told Hannity that "we can see the finish line" during the interview.
He said, “There’s nothing any government is doing, or any country in the world is doing now to help Iran that is in any way impeding our mission.”
The secretary also criticises NATO, stating that the US may need to reconsider if the alliance "that has served this country well for a while is still serving that purpose".
Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that President Trump will address the nation and update on the situation in Iran. The address is set for 9 PM ET on Wednesday, which corresponds to 6:30 am IST on Thursday.
In a post on X, she wrote, “TUNE IN: Tomorrow night at 9PM ET, President Trump will give an Address to the Nation to provide an important update on Iran.”
The White House announcement follows the President’s statement that US ground operations could conclude "very soon," suggesting a timeline of two to three weeks.
"Now, we’re finishing the job. I think in two weeks or maybe a few days longer, we’ll do the job. We want to knock out everything they’ve got," he was quoted as saying by The Guardian.
