Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin reviewed bilateral ties across key sectors and discussed India-Russia engagement in BRICS as the two leaders met on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on Friday, September 11.
The discussions covered political, economic, defence, energy, space, skill mobility and people-to-people cooperation, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
The leaders also welcomed Russia's International Industrial Exhibition INNOPROM India, held in India for the first time from September 9-11, and highlighted its importance in expanding trade and industrial ties. Modi and Putin also visited the exhibition and interacted with participants.

With India holding the BRICS Chairship in 2026, the two leaders exchanged views on their engagement in the grouping. The BRICS summit is taking place against the backdrop of trade tensions, geopolitical conflicts, energy security concerns and supply-chain disruptions, with member countries looking at economic resilience, trade and investment, supply-chain security and strengthening the voice of the Global South.
India's priorities as BRICS chair include food security, energy access, technology cooperation and sustainable growth, with discussions also focusing on reforms in global governance and deeper financial cooperation among member nations.
Modi and Putin also discussed regional and global developments, including the conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region, which have affected maritime trade as well as the safety and security of Indian seafarers.
Modi reiterated India's position that dialogue and diplomacy are the way forward in resolving conflicts, while conveying that India is ready to assist in peace efforts.
The two leaders agreed to remain engaged to further strengthen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia, which the MEA said has continued to grow and shown resilience amid geopolitical uncertainties.
The meeting was the second between Modi and Putin this year. The two leaders had earlier met on August 31 on the sidelines of the 26th SCO Summit in Bishkek.
Putin also invited Modi to visit Russia for the 24th India-Russia Annual Summit, which the Prime Minister accepted. The dates for the summit will be decided through diplomatic channels based on mutual convenience.
