"Effective immediately, processing of all immigration requests relating to Afghan nationals is stopped indefinitely pending further review of security and vetting protocols," the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, November 27.
"The protection and safety of our homeland and of the American people remains our singular focus and mission," it added.
The move comes after two National Guard members were shot by a gunman in Washington DC during day time on Wednesday, November 26. The authorities soon held the shooter who, they say, is an Afghan national.
However, the motive of the shooter is not known as of yet, and the identities of the shot guards is also not revealed by the US authorities.
FBI Director Kash Patel and Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said that the two troops were hospitalised and are in critical condition, as per news agency The Associated Press (AP).
This is a developing story...
