What is the story about?
NASA and SpaceX are preparing for the launch of Crew-12 to the International Space Station (ISS) on 13 February. Liftoff is scheduled for 5:15 a.m. EST (3:45 p.m. IST) on Friday.
The four-astronaut relief crew comprises NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev. They will travel to the ISS aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, with docking scheduled for 3:15 p.m. EST on Saturday, 14 February.
NASA’s Crew-12 launch coverage will be available on NASA+ from 3:15 a.m. EST on Friday, while docking coverage will begin at 1:15 p.m. EST on Saturday.
NASA and SpaceX teams have given the go-ahead for the Crew-12 launch following a final weather briefing, ahead of flight controllers taking their positions at their consoles. The crew will lift off from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft atop a Falcon 9 rocket.
In a blog post, the US space agency said: “NASA and SpaceX teams gave a ‘go’ to launch Crew-12 at 5:15 a.m. EST on Friday, 13 Feb., on its mission to the International Space Station.”
Upon arrival at the orbiting laboratory, the astronauts will join the existing crew, bringing the total number of people on board to seven, and will carry out a range of scientific research.
During their mission, Crew-12 will conduct experiments aimed at supporting future Moon and Mars missions, while also delivering benefits on Earth.
The research includes studies on bacteria that cause pneumonia, on-demand intravenous fluid generation, automated plant health monitoring, investigations into plant and nitrogen-fixing microbe interactions, and research into the impact of physical characteristics on blood flow during spaceflight.
The crew will launch aboard the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft named Freedom, which previously flew NASA’s SpaceX Crew-4 and Crew-9 missions, as well as the private astronaut missions Axiom Mission 2 and Axiom Mission 3.
