What is the story about?
Bangladesh came to a halt on Saturday, December 20, as thousands gathered to bid farewell to Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent leader and Inqilab Moncho convenor, who was shot by masked assailants on December 12.
The funeral prayer service, held at Manik Mia Avenue in front of the Parliament in Dhaka, drew a massive crowd, with many draping themselves in the national flag and chanting slogans demanding justice for Hadi's killing.
As per the family's wishes, Hadi was buried beside the grave of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, a revered figure in Bangladesh. The burial site was prepared near the Dhaka University Central Mosque, where mourners had begun arriving from early morning.
Following two days of protests by supporters of the Inqilab Moncho, the atmosphere was sombre, with national flags flown at half-mast and special prayers held at places of worship. The funeral service was held amid heightened security measures, with the Border Guard Bangladesh and police deployed at the Parliament building and other major locations in Dhaka.
The Inqilab Moncho had instructed that only the national flag of Bangladesh be displayed at the funeral prayer service.
Earlier, Dhaka University Assistant Proctor Rafiqul Islam stated thatHadi will be buried on the south side of the grave of Kazi Nazrul Islam, reported Bangladeshi daily newspaper The Business Standard.
Hadi's death had sparked protests and unrest across Bangladesh, prompting the National Cyber Security Agency to call on the public to report social media posts promoting terrorism or inciting violence, reported BDNews24.
On Saturday, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications issued a statement announcing that such posts could be reported via WhatsApp and email. As per the officials, the complaints would be reviewed by the National Cyber Security Agency before being forwarded to social media platforms via the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).
Hadi, a prominent leader of Bangladesh's student uprising in July 2024, was shot in the head by masked assailants last week. He was airlifted to Singapore for medical treatment, but died while undergoing treatment on December 18, after fighting for his life for six days.
The post-mortem of Hadi was performed at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, according to the Business Standard report.
