UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that he is determined to keep relations with the US "strong and constructive" for the security of its people in an emergency address to the nation on Monday, January 19.
The address comes after Trump proposed an additional 10% tariff on the UK and other European nations who opposed Trump's wish to take over Greenland.
Starmer said that the UK receives "hundreds of billions" in investment from the UK with close collaboration on defence and nuclear capabilities.
Starmer
over the weekend said that the UK will pursue the issue with the US administration, citing that imposing tariffs for working towards security of NATO alliance is "completely wrong".
He emphasised Britain's position on Greenland, stating the island is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and that "its future is a matter for the Greenlanders and the Danes".
"We have also made clear that Arctic Security matters for the whole of NATO and allies should all do more together to address the threat from Russia across different parts of the Arctic," he wrote on X.
Besides UK, Trump has also threatened Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland with tariffs.
Starmer spoke with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Sunday (January 18) before speaking to Trump on the same day.
