What is the story about?
The US Federal Reserve’s two-day policy meeting begins on Tuesday, September 15, with markets closely watching the central bank’s interest-rate decision and Chair Kevin Warsh’s comments on the outlook for monetary policy.
The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) will announce its rate decision on Wednesday, September 16, at 2:00 pm ET, or 11:30 pm IST. Warsh’s press conference will follow at 2:30 pm ET, or midnight IST, according to the Federal Reserve’s official schedule.
The September meeting is one of the Fed’s four meetings this year at which policymakers also release their projections for interest rates and the economy.
Fed rate decision: What markets expect
The federal funds target range has remained at 3.50%-3.75% since July. Markets have increased their expectations of a rate hike at the September meeting following stronger inflation data.
The latest Consumer Price Index report showed the biggest monthly increase in four months, reinforcing expectations that the US central bank could raise rates at the conclusion of its meeting on Wednesday.
A 25-basis-point hike would mark the first increase in more than a year.

Trump weighs in on Fed rates
US President Donald Trump has also weighed in on the rate debate, saying the US “should be paying the lowest interest rate in the world”.
Speaking to reporters at the Irish Open golf tournament on Sunday, Trump said he did not know whether Fed policymakers would raise rates at their meeting this week. However, he argued that the US should have the lowest borrowing costs regardless of what the Fed’s data showed on inflation and the economy.
Treasury yields in focus
The Fed decision comes as US government bond yields have climbed, adding to the focus on the central bank’s policy outlook.
The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield has moved higher ahead of the meeting, while the 30-year and two-year Treasury yields have also risen. Higher Treasury yields can have broader implications for borrowing costs, financial markets and the economy.
Investors will therefore be watching not just the rate decision but also Warsh’s comments for clues on how the Fed views inflation and the path of rates ahead.
