What is the story about?
Talks between Russia, Ukraine and the United States aimed at ending the war in Ukraine are expected to resume in Abu Dhabi in the first half of November, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday, according to AFP.
The discussions will take place in a trilateral format, Peskov told reporters, as Moscow signalled its willingness to restart negotiations that have been stalled since the beginning of the year.
The move follows a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US special envoy Steve Witkoff in Saint Petersburg on Wednesday. Witkoff had met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders in Oslo on Tuesday as part of Washington's diplomatic efforts to advance negotiations.
Following the meetings, both Moscow and Kyiv expressed readiness to resume direct talks mediated by the United States, AFP reported.
Russia has suggested that the discussions could take place around November 10, while Zelenskyy has called for them to be held as soon as possible.
Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and the conflict is now in its fifth year.
In a televised interview aired late on Thursday, Putin said trilateral talks would focus on security arrangements under a final peace agreement rather than a short-term ceasefire, according to AFP.
