'It is in our shared interest that security is real': Ukraine's Zelenskyy on US-brokered peace negotiation with Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has emphasised the need for the United States' backing as it looks to engage with a peace deal proposed by Donald Trump.

In a post on X, Zelenskyy said, "We worked with the Ukrainian negotiating team today on the text of the document prepared with the United States in Geneva. The principles in this document can be developed into deeper agreements."

Furthermore, underscoring the threat from Russia, Zelenskyy added, "It is in our shared interest that security is real. I count on continued active cooperation with the American side and President Trump. Much depends on the United States because it’s America's strength that Russia takes most seriously. I thank everyone who stands with Ukraine."

Earlier, after initial jitters and hesitation over the plan, including objections to territorial concessions on the part of Ukraine, Kyiv had eased its stance. The war-torn country said that it was ready to move forward with a US-backed peace deal and that Zelenskyy was prepared to discuss its sensitive points with US President Donald Trump in talks he said should include European allies.
