What is the story about?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held separate meetings with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, as West Asia tensions continue to dominate global diplomatic discourse.
The engagements mark a significant multilateral interaction hosted by India on May 14-15, 2026, bringing together top diplomats from BRICS member countries to deliberate on global security challenges, economic cooperation and geopolitical instability.
PM Modi also interacted with other visiting foreign ministers and participated in the official BRICS family photograph, highlighting India’s outreach to partner nations amid a complex international environment.
The bilateral interactions with Iran and Russia come at a time of heightened tensions in West Asia following the ongoing Iran conflict involving the United States and Israel.
While the meetings were held on the sidelines of the BRICS forum, they underline India’s continued diplomatic engagement with key global stakeholders during a sensitive geopolitical phase.
At the ministerial gathering, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi sharply criticised what he described as coercive policies and sustained pressure from the United States.
He said several countries in the room had faced similar forms of external coercion and called for stronger unity among BRICS members to resist such practices.
Araghchi urged collective action, stating that such approaches should be “relegated to the dustbin of history,” and emphasised deeper coordination among participating nations.

Warning against escalating global conflicts
In his remarks, Araghchi also warned that rising geopolitical confrontations were destabilising the international system.
He said actions driven by “reckless adventures” ultimately harm all sides, including those initiating them, and added that global instability creates a “lose-lose” outcome for both governments and economies.
The Iranian minister further noted that history shows declining global powers often resort to aggressive measures to maintain influence.
The BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting has provided a platform for member states to engage on pressing global issues, particularly amid ongoing conflicts and shifting power dynamics.
