The death toll from the devastating floods in Nepal has climbed to 987, according to the latest update from the country’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority. The number of missing people has dropped to 3,916, while rescue teams have so far brought 11,814 people to safety.

In another striking incident, a family survived inside a green-coloured house as a powerful stream carrying water, mud, huge boulders and uprooted trees swept through the area.
The flood destroyed buildings in its path and surrounded the house from all sides. Despite the force of the water, the structure remained standing, allowing the family to survive. A video of the incident has since gone viral on social media.
97-year-old woman rescued from rubble
One of the most remarkable rescues involved 97-year-old Guna Maya Bohara, who was found alive after being trapped beneath the rubble of a care home.
Police and Nepal Army personnel reportedly spent around four hours removing debris before rescuing her. Images and videos showed Bohara being brought out of the wreckage and placed in the bucket of an excavator. Her rescue became one of the most widely shared stories of survival from the floods.
8-year-old survives alone in forest
Another survivor was an eight-year-old boy who managed to survive alone in a forest after being separated from his family following a glacier collapse and avalanche.
His mother feared that she had lost her sons, but the child was eventually found alive and brought to safety, reported BBC. His survival was followed by an emotional reunion with his family.
Five-year-old girl rescued after nearly two days
A five-year-old girl, Manisha, was also rescued after being trapped beneath rubble near Syabrubesi in Rasuwa district.
Rescue workers searching the area heard what they initially thought was a cat under the debris. After removing the rubble, they discovered Manisha trapped underneath. It took around two hours to bring her out.
She was found alive but barely responsive. Bad weather initially prevented her from being evacuated by helicopter, so rescue teams took her to a camp where she was given water and boiled rice water. She later regained consciousness and was flown to a hospital in Kathmandu. The hospital said she was in stable condition and recovering.
Survivors recount devastating losses
Alongside these rescue stories, survivors have described the enormous human cost of the floods. Kalpana Malla from Nepal's Nuwakot district told the BBC that she watched several members of her family being swept away.
She said her father, mother, sister and her sister's children were among those lost. Malla and her son survived after climbing onto the roof of a house. Other survivors also reported losing homes, farmland and livestock as floodwaters swept through their communities.
For Tulsi Bahadur Bhandari of Dolakha, survival came through a narrow escape as the flood swept through his settlement, according to The Kathmandu Post. While trying to flee, he was caught in a powerful torrent of black mud and floodwater as houses collapsed around him.
The force of the current threw him towards a hillside, helping him escape the worst of the flooding. From his hospital bed, Bhandari said he believed he would not have survived if the current did not push him towards the slope.
Rescue teams search for trapped hydropower workers
Meanwhile, Nepalese rescuers have been using explosives to clear sections of a mud-filled tunnel network at the Trishuli-3A hydropower site, where more than 600 workers are believed to be trapped. Rescue teams have also been pumping air into the tunnels as families wait anxiously for news of their loved ones. The operation involves Nepalese and Chinese military personnel, with experts from India, South Korea and Australia also assisting.

Twenty-year-old Prabesh Nagarkoti emerged as a local hero after a devastating flash flood struck Angitar in Nuwakot’s Bidur area.
As the water levels rose rapidly, Prabesh acted quickly, first ensuring the safety of his mother and aunt before helping others caught in the sudden flood. He said he saved seven people, including strangers, by ensuring they climbed uphill as the village was flooded within minutes.
