Israel said it carried out fresh strikes on military targets in western and central Iran on Monday, June 8, hours after Iran launched a new wave of missile attacks on Israel.
The Mahshahr petrochemical complex in Iran's southwestern Khuzestan province was hit in the attacks.
The Iran Guards, in response, reportedly attacked a similar plant in Israel’s Haifa city and warned of further attacks on non-military and energy targets.
“By taking action against civilian targets and targeting oil industries,
the Zionist enemy has started a dangerous game, the scope of which will encompass all energy targets in the region, and its consequences for the global economy are the responsibility of the main arsonist in this field – the United States,” IRGC said in a statement.
Iran's semi-official Fars News Agency said Tehran had launched a new round of strikes targeting Israeli air bases. Iran has described the attacks as retaliation for Israeli military action in Lebanon and subsequent Israeli strikes inside Iran.
The latest exchange comes despite US President Donald Trump's public call for restraint and reported efforts to dissuade Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from retaliating. Reuters reported that the Mahshahr strike marked the first known attack on an Iranian energy facility since the April ceasefire, raising concerns of a broader regional escalation and potential impact on ongoing US-Iran negotiations.
