What is the story about?
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will travel to New Delhi for the BRICS Summit scheduled for September, ANI reported on Friday, citing Iranian sources.
India is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit under its 2026 chairship, with the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”. New Delhi took over the rotating presidency from Brazil at the start of the year.
The news of Pezeshkian’s visit comes when there is no end in sight to the US-Iran war.
During a phone call in March, Pezeshkian urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to support an independent BRICS role in ending the hostilities, while Modi stressed the need to protect critical infrastructure and keep shipping routes open.
Iran joined BRICS in 2024 and has since sought deeper economic cooperation with the bloc. Earlier this week, Iran’s central bank governor said Tehran was set to join the BRICS-backed New Development Bank, though the lender had not confirmed the move, according to Reuters.
