US President Donald Trump asked his supporters to pledge that they would vote in the upcoming midterm elections before joking that they would "go to hell" if they failed to do so.
Trump made the remarks while addressing supporters at the Republican National Convention in Dallas on Thursday. The president repeatedly urged Republicans to turn out for the November 3 midterm elections as the party looks to retain control of Congress.
During his speech, Trump asked members of the audience to raise their right hands before leading them through a pledge to vote. He also urged supporters to encourage their friends and family members to cast their ballots.
"You got to do me the biggest favour you've ever done," Trump told the crowd, asking supporters to treat the midterm elections as though he were personally on the ballot. "I'm asking you to pretend that I'm on the ballot," he said.
At one point, Trump jokingly asked the crowd to repeat that they would "try to cheat like hell like they do" as part of the pledge. He later told supporters that they should vote on November 3 or cast their ballots before Election Day.
After completing the pledge, Trump once again urged the crowd to vote and joked about what would happen if they chose not to participate.
"You know what happens if you don't vote? You go to hell," Trump said, before adding that he did not want that to happen and asking supporters to go out and vote.
The president took the stage after Vice President JD Vance and repeatedly stressed the importance of voting as Republicans seek to retain control of both chambers of Congress.
“And you know what? If you want, you can vote Democrat, but I don't think there's one person in this room that's going to vote Democrat; I don't think so. So I don't have to preface, I don't want to waste the words, vote Republican, just go out. If you vote, you're voting Republican, okay,” he added.
The two-day event in Dallas marked the Republican Party's first-ever midterm convention. It was organised to bring Republican supporters together ahead of the November midterm elections. The gathering, dubbed a "Trump-a-Palooza," placed the president at the centre of the party's campaign push.
US Vice President JD Vance, former White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, Donald Trump Jr. and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. also addressed the gathering.
