Iran and Pakistan discuss ceasefire breaches as diplomacy seeks lead role

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a phone conversation with Pakistan Army Commander Asim Munir, focusing on reported ceasefire breaches in Iran and Lebanon, according to Iran’s Foreign Ministry. Munir, who played a central role in mediating the two-week ceasefire agreement, emphasised the importance of adherence to the truce to maintain stability in the region.

The discussions come amid concerns that violations at certain locations across the conflict zone could undermine the spirit of the peace process. During the call, Araghchi highlighted Iran’s commitment to monitoring ceasefire compliance and urged restraint from all parties involved.

In parallel, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif took to social media, noting that "violations of ceasefire have been reported at few places across the conflict zone which undermine the spirit of peace process. I earnestly and sincerely urge all parties to exercise restraint and respect the ceasefire for two weeks, as agreed upon, so that diplomacy can take a lead role towards peaceful settlement of the conflict."

The two-week ceasefire, brokered with active Pakistani mediation, was intended to allow diplomatic channels to advance a lasting resolution to the conflict. Both sides underlined that adherence to the truce is critical for the continuation of dialogue and for creating conditions conducive to negotiation.

In contrast, Israel has issued strong statements regarding ongoing hostilities from Lebanon. The Israel Foreign Ministry criticised Lebanese leadership for failing to disarm Hezbollah, stating that while attacks on Israel from Lebanese territory have continued, no accountability or preventive action has been taken. Hezbollah ministers remain in the Lebanese government, and the Iranian ambassador is openly present in Beirut, defying earlier agreements. The ministry stressed that Israel must act against Hezbollah in deeds, not words, if Lebanon is incapable of doing so.

Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that they will continue striking Hezbollah targets whenever operationally possible, assuring that the security of northern Israeli residents will not be compromised, according to IDF Chief of the General Staff LTG Eyal Zamir.

While enforcement on the ground remains a challenge, officials from Iran and Pakistan reiterated their commitment to ensuring that the ceasefire holds and that incidents of violations are promptly addressed.
