United States President Trump on Monday, December 22, announced plans to develop a new ‘Trump-class’ of battleship, as part of a revamped ‘Golden Fleet’. The 79-year-old has stated that the Trump Class USS Defiant ships, to carry an array of weapons, will be operational in two and a half years. Construction for the new series of heavily armed Navy ‘battleships’ is anticipated to start soon.
Speaking at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, the President stated that the US Navy intends to build a new generation of American-designed, 30,000 to 40,000-tonne large surface combatants, or battleships, to meet the realities of modern maritime fighting.
"As commander in chief, it's my great honour to announce that I have approved a plan for the Navy to begin the construction of two brand-new, very large — largest we've ever built — battleships," he announced. According to the President, the program will start with two vessels and is expected to grow to between 20 and 25 ships.
“We had big battleships. These are bigger. They’ll be 100 times the force, the power [of the old ships], and there’s never been anything like these ships,” he said. Trump, who spoke while flanked on both sides by posters depicting designs of the ‘Trump class’ ships, stated that the vessels would be built domestically, creating ‘thousands’ of jobs.
“Each one of these will be the largest battleship in the history of our country, the largest battleship in the history of the world,” The President added.
Asked if the planned warships are a counter to China, Trump said, “It’s a counter to everybody, it’s not China. We get along great with China.” Trump noted he would be personally involved in the design process because he is a "very aesthetic person".

The ships are expected to be 100 times more powerful than the biggest of any previous American-built warships and would be the most lethal surface combatant ever constructed.
They are envisioned to operate with a smaller crew of roughly 650 to 850 sailors.
The ships will be larger than present destroyers, weighing more than 30,000 tonnes, and equipped with the latest technologies such as artificial intelligence and directed energy lasers.
The new battleships will carry conventional naval weapons as well as nuclear-armed, sea-launched cruise missiles.
