What is the story about?
Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday, September 12, called on BRICS countries to stand on the “right side of history” and play a leading role in addressing global challenges, as the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit began in New Delhi.
Xi said BRICS should act as a “pioneer of our times” and focus on innovation, peace, cooperation between civilisations and reform of global governance.
Xi calls for BRICS role in Middle East conflict
Xi also urged BRICS to play the role of a peacemaker in the Middle East conflict, saying China was ready to work with other members towards that goal.
According to state-run CCTV, Xi said the war did not serve the common interests of the international community.
His remarks come as the BRICS summit is being held against the backdrop of conflicts and geopolitical tensions, including the war in the Middle East and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The conflicts have also affected global energy supplies, trade and transport.
Xi outlines four priorities for BRICS
Xi said BRICS should take the lead in four key areas.
Innovation-driven development: BRICS should promote innovation and support development driven by new technologies and ideas.
Peace and stability: The grouping should work towards protecting peace and stability.
Mutual learning between civilisations: BRICS countries should encourage dialogue and greater understanding between different civilisations.
Global governance reform: The bloc should push for reforms to make global governance more effective and representative.
Xi described BRICS as a leading group of the Global South and a model of self-reliance for emerging and developing countries.
Xi arrives in New Delhi for BRICS summit
Xi arrived in New Delhi on Saturday for the BRICS summit and a scheduled meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The visit is Xi’s first to India in seven years and comes as New Delhi and Beijing work to rebuild ties following the 2020 military clash along their disputed Himalayan border.
A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said on Friday that Beijing was willing to work with India from a strategic and long-term perspective, properly manage differences and strengthen ties as neighbours, friends and mutually supportive partners.
The Xi-Modi meeting on Saturday evening is expected to be their third meeting in three years, according to the spokesperson.
China to host BRICS summit in 2027
Xi said China would take over the BRICS chairmanship next year and host the 19th BRICS summit.
The grouping currently includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
BRICS was established in 2009 and has expanded significantly in recent years. The group represents more than 40% of the world’s population and close to a quarter of the global economy.
The 18th BRICS summit in New Delhi is taking place amid major geopolitical tensions and discussions on trade, energy security, global governance and cooperation among developing countries.
