What is the story about?
The world was anxiously waiting as US President Donald Trump's deadline for a catastrophic attack on Iran was nearing on Tuesday night. To makes matters worse, Trump had posted on social media threatening to eradicate the entire civilisation (Iran).
But around one-and-a-half hour before the 8 pm (ET) deadline, the President put out a post on Truth Social announcing a two week ceasefire claiming it was a double sided ceasefire. Forty minutes after Trump’s announcement, Iran's Foreign minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that Iran too has decided to halt its defensive action for the next two weeks.
The ceasefire announcement was not the only point of commanility between both sides.. The US and Iran, both, acknowledged the role played by Pakistan.
Trump started his post announcing the ceasefire by referring to the conversations with Pakistani PM Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir. "Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks," he stated.
Similarly, Iran's Foreign Affairs minister Abbas Araghchi also started his statement announcing the ceasefire by acknowledging and thanking Pakistan for its efforts. "On behalf of the Islamic Republic of Iran, I express gratitude and appreciation for my dear brothers Prime Minister of Pakistan Sharif and Field Marshal Munir for their tireless efforts to end the war in the region," he said.
He added that the Pakistani PM request (in a post on X) for a ceasefire was among one of the reasons Iran agreed to a ceasefire.
Around three hours before Trump's announcement, Sharif, in a post on X, requested Trump to extend his deadline and Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz for two weeks.
"Diplomatic efforts for peaceful settlement of the ongoing war in the Middle East are progressing steadily, strongly and powerfully with the potential to lead to substantive results in near future. To allow diplomacy to run its course, I earnestly request President Trump to extend the deadline for two weeks. Pakistan, in all sincerity, requests the Iranian brothers to open Strait of Hormuz for a corresponding period of two weeks as a goodwill gesture. We also urge all warring parties to observe a ceasefire everywhere for two weeks to allow diplomacy to achieve conclusive termination of war, in the interest of long-term peace and stability in the region," Shehbaz's post on X said.
Pakistan has been playing the role of a mediator along with other countries like Oman. But in the last few days, the country became one of the primary mediators, repositioning itself from a terror sponsoring state to a peace broker.
After both sides announced a ceasefire, Sharif, in another post on X welcomed the step and expressed gratitude to the leadership of both countries. "I warmly welcome the sagacious gesture and extend deepest gratitude to the leadership of both the countries and invite their delegations to Islamabad on Friday, 10th April 2026, to further negotiate for a conclusive agreement to settle all disputes. Both parties have displayed remarkable wisdom and understanding and have remained constructively engaged in furthering the cause of peace and stability. We earnestly hope, that the ‘Islamabad Talks’ succeed in achieving sustainable peace and wish to share more good news in coming days!," he stated.
Reports citing a message from Iran's Supreme National Security Council confirmed that the talks will take place in Islamabad this Friday.
