US Embassy issues security alert ahead of Bangladesh elections on February 12

The United States Embassy in Bangladesh has issued a security alert for American citizens ahead of the country’s parliamentary elections and national referendum scheduled for February 12, 2026.

In an advisory released on January 30, the embassy warned that political violence or extremist attacks could occur during the election period, with potential targets including political rallies, polling stations, and religious sites such as churches, temples, and mosques.

The embassy urged US citizens to remain vigilant, avoid demonstrations, and exercise caution around large gatherings, noting that even peaceful rallies could turn confrontational and escalate into violence.

The Government of Bangladesh has also announced restrictions on transportation starting February 10. Motorcycles will face restrictions from that date, while all forms of transportation will be restricted on February 11 and 12. In light of this, the US Embassy in Dhaka said it will offer limited onsite services on February 11 and 12.

The advisory advised American nationals to monitor local news, keep a low profile, carry charged mobile phones for emergencies, review personal security plans, and plan alternative travel routes.
