India and the United States have concluded two days of meetings in New Delhi to review progress in ongoing trade negotiations, with both sides reporting further advances towards an interim trade agreement.
Multiple rounds of discussions were held between US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal as the two countries explored ways to deepen their economic partnership. In a social media post, Goyal appreciated Greer's leadership and the efforts of both negotiating teams, while noting the constructive and forward-looking nature of the discussions.
Both leaders reviewed key elements of the proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), including market access, digital trade, supply chain resilience, non-tariff barriers and expanded cooperation in strategic sectors. They also welcomed the momentum generated by successive technical- and ministerial-level engagements in recent months.
According to the Commerce Ministry, discussions focused on pathways to conclude an interim agreement as an important milestone towards a comprehensive BTA. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to a balanced, commercially meaningful and mutually beneficial agreement for businesses, farmers, workers and consumers.
India and the US also reiterated their shared objective of expanding bilateral trade, fostering innovation, and building resilient and trusted supply chains. Both expressed confidence that ongoing negotiations would further strengthen economic ties and deepen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
The talks come as both countries seek to conclude an interim agreement before current US tariff arrangements expire on July 24. If no agreement is reached by then, standard Most Favoured Nation (MFN) tariff rates are expected to apply.
Earlier this month, Goyal said India and the US had held "excellent discussions" between June 2 and June 4, with a full team of US trade officials visiting New Delhi. At the time, he said both sides were "fast moving towards closing all the open ends" and that the first tranche of the agreement would provide India with preferential access compared with competing exporters.
India and the US had agreed on a framework for an interim trade agreement in a joint statement issued on February 7, 2026. The framework reaffirmed both countries' commitment to broader negotiations for a comprehensive Bilateral Trade Agreement.
A delegation from the Office of the United States Trade Representative, led by its chief negotiator, visited India from June 1 to June 4 to advance discussions. The Commerce Ministry said the two sides held constructive talks on trade in goods, non-tariff measures, customs and trade facilitation, economic security alignment and other areas of mutual interest.
In May, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said both countries were on the verge of finalising an interim trade deal, with only around 1% of negotiations remaining. Echoing that assessment, Goyal said most major issues had been resolved, with only minor details left to be finalised.
Government sources have previously indicated that India's priorities include securing relief from tariff actions linked to Section 301 investigations and obtaining preferential access for Indian exports relative to competing countries. Indian negotiators last visited Washington DC from April 20 to April 23 for in-person discussions with their US counterparts.
