What is the story about?
Tulsi Gabbard has announced her resignation as US President Donald Trump’s director of national intelligence, citing her husband’s recent diagnosis with a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer.
In a resignation letter dated May 22, 2026, Gabbard said her resignation would take effect on June 30.
“My husband, Abraham, has recently been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer,” she wrote. “At this time, I must step away from public service to be by his side and fully support him through this battle.”
Gabbard said her husband had supported her through military deployments, political campaigns and her tenure in public office, adding that she could not “in good conscience” ask him to face the illness alone while she continued in the demanding role.
She also thanked Trump and the American public for the opportunity to serve as Director of National Intelligence (DNI), saying she remained committed to ensuring a smooth leadership transition over the coming weeks.
Earlier reports by CNBC and Fox News had said Gabbard informed Trump of her decision during an Oval Office meeting on Friday.
Gabbard currently oversees the US intelligence community in her role as DNI, one of the top national security positions in the Trump administration.
