There is more than a 10% chance that artificial intelligence (AI) could kill all humans within the next 10 years, an Anthropic researcher has warned.
Evan Hubinger, who works on AI safety at Anthropic, said the company’s researchers believe AI could potentially cause human extinction. He put the risk of AI causing human extinction over the next decade at more than 10%. His warning came soon after Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned.
Coxon, who previously worked at OpenAI, said Anthropic and OpenAI are racing to build increasingly powerful AI systems. He warned that the companies may not be doing enough to address the risks. According to Coxon, future AI systems could become smarter than humans, hack computer systems, transform entire industries rapidly and gain access to real-world power and resources.
He warned that such systems could potentially “kill us all by the end of the decade”.
AI experts who warn about these risks fear that highly capable AI systems could eventually act against human interests, similar to scenarios depicted in science-fiction films. One major concern is that a powerful AI system could stop following human instructions or goals. Earlier, AI systems mainly answered questions or followed simple instructions. Newer AI systems, however, can take actions, use computer tools and complete tasks with less human involvement. In one case, a group of AI agents inside OpenAI hacked into the AI platform Hugging Face. They gained control of computer servers and attempted to hide what they had done, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Researchers are working on ways to make AI systems follow human instructions and avoid harmful actions. They are also studying how AI systems arrive at their answers and decisions. However, there is currently no proven way to control a future superintelligent AI system.
AI researchers say human extinction is not the only risk. Another concern is that humans could become too dependent on AI, gradually handing more important decisions to machines.
Hubinger said Anthropic is trying to address the problem. However, he also said the company “do[es] not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to”.
