Kohima, Apr 9 (PTI) An estimated 80.62 per cent voter turnout was recorded as polling for the byelection to the Koridang assembly seat in Mokokchung district of Nagaland when voting ended at 5 pm on Thursday,
the EC said.
The polling process remained largely peaceful, officials said, adding that 18,045 out of 22,382 electors cast their votes.
Of the 30 polling stations, several polling stations registered exceptionally high turnout of above 95 per cent. These include Mangmetong II with 99.08 per cent, Mangmetong V (98.56 pc), Mangmetong IV (97.57 pc), Mangmetong III (97.93 pc), Mangmetong I (97.15 pc), Longkhum V (95.33 pc) and Sattsu (95.05 pc).
In contrast, a few polling stations recorded very low turnout: Alichen II (15.30 pc) and Alichen IV (22.93 pc).
Officials stated that adequate security deployment of both CAPF and state forces ensured smooth conduct of polling.
Six candidates are in the fray in the Koridang by-election.
The ruling People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) has fielded BJP nominee Daochier I Imchen, while the Congress has nominated T Chalukumba Ao. The NPP candidate is I Abenjang, and there are three Independent candidates.
The by-election was necessitated following the death of BJP legislator Imkong L. Imchen, a five-time MLA, on November 11 at the age of 75. The saffron party fielded his son.
