New Delhi, May 3 (PTI) Why should only humans have all the fun with food? This simple thought, paired with a deep love for her own dog, inspired Mumbai-based baker Gaargi Prehar to first experiment in her kitchen
and, after receiving a thumbs-up from her most honest critic, put pen to paper.
The result: a delightful, drool-worthy cookbook, titled "The Barkery Book", created especially for dog parents who want to treat their furry companions to something truly special.
It is published by HarperCollins India.
Drawing from her experience running a bakery dedicated to dogs, Prehar brings together a collection of recipes that are as wholesome as they are indulgent -- making this one of the first cookbooks of its kind for dog lovers.
"'The Barkery Book' is something I created out of pure love for dogs, and honestly, a little obsession with making them feel as spoiled as possible. It began with experimenting in my kitchen for my own pets -- my very honest critics -- and slowly grew into a collection of recipes that are cute, safe, and genuinely good for them.
"More than just a recipe book, it's a small investment in your pet's well-being. It helps you make informed choices, giving you full control over what goes into their food -- especially important for sensitive pets," said Prehar, who is also the owner of Puplord's Bakery in Mumbai.
From oven-free snacks and baked cookies to cakes, savoury jerky, and even dog-friendly 'beer' and 'wine', these DIY recipes -- crafted for Indian kitchens -- are designed with pets' health in mind: gluten-free, xylitol-free, and packed with nutrition.
The book also features vegetarian recipes, along with allergen information, toxic food warnings, and fuss-free ingredient swaps, making it a practical guide for pet parents who want both care and creativity in their dog’s diet.
The preface is written by noted chef Pooja Dhingra and is accompanied by a special message from celebrity chef and author of several cookbooks, Vikas Khanna.
"This book is a celebration of wagging tails, wet noses and curious eyes peeking over the kitchen counter... Whether you're a seasoned baker or just starting out, you'll find something here to make your heart and your pet's tail happy," Khanna wrote in his praise of the book.
"The Barkery Book", priced at Rs 699, is currently available for purchase across online and offline stores. PTI MG MG
