Kolkata, June 1 (PTI) BJP MLA Biraj Biswas on Monday became the youngest member of CM Suvendu Adhikari's Council of Ministers at 32, fulfilling a childhood dream that carried him from student politics
to the corridors of power.
Biswas, the MLA of Karandighi in Uttar Dinajpur, took oath as a Minister of State at the Lok Bhavan alongside 34 senior leaders as the new BJP government expanded its cabinet.
"I am proud to have given birth to such a son. Today, his dream has come true, and I am very happy," his mother, Bina Biswas, told PTI.
Recalling his early fascination with public life, she said her son had often spoken about entering politics while he was still a student.
"He would always say that he would continue his studies seriously but remain active in politics and one day become a minister. It was his dream," she said.
Biswas's elevation marks another milestone in a political career that began in student activism and evolved through years of organisational work within the BJP and its affiliated bodies.
Associated with the RSS, Biswas started his political journey with the ABVP, where he steadily rose through the ranks.
A law graduate, he first came into the political spotlight during the protests over the killing of two students in alleged firing and bombing at Daribhit High School in Islampur in September 2018.
Over the years, he served as ABVP's state secretary before being made the all-India secretary.
Biswas was actively involved in several students' movements across north Bengal. BJP leaders have often credited him with mobilising students and youth during the party's expansion phase in the region.
After beginning his legal practice, Biswas was known for taking up cases involving individuals who claimed political victimisation.
He defeated TMC's Gautam Pal, who was seeking re-election from Karandighi, by a margin of nearly 20,000 votes.
The BJP's strong electoral performance in north Bengal has been a key factor in the composition of the new Council of Ministers, with several legislators from the region being sworn in. Among them, Biswas has drawn particular attention due to his age and rapid rise through the party ranks.
BJP leaders view his induction as a reflection of the party's effort to blend youthful leadership with administrative experience.
Celebrations erupted in Karandighi after Biswas took the oath. For his mother, the achievement remains deeply personal.
"He always believed he would reach this position one day. Today, that dream has come true," she said. PTI SCH SOM
