Mumbai, Jun 2 (PTI) The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking has sanctioned an action plan of Rs 20 crore to improve the reliability of electricity supply in Mumbai amid a rise
in power outages in some areas of the city, officials said on Tuesday.
According to a BEST spokesperson, the plan includes deployment of additional manpower and material to expedite cable fault repairs and restore the electricity supply more quickly.
The official said that as part of the initiative, around 690 field workers will be recruited to speed up fault-repair work. Additionally, 127 motor vehicle drivers and 100 mechanics from BEST's transport division will be temporarily transferred to assist in handling power supply complaints.
The undertaking will also hire diesel generator sets and aerial lifts with crew to ensure prompt restoration of power during cable faults, the official said.
An additional fault control centre will be established in the Tardeo area for quicker resolution of power outage complaints, the official said.
The BEST official said repairs of critical cable faults will be undertaken on a war footing to enhance the reliability of electricity supply across its distribution network.
The BEST Undertaking supplies power to over ten lakh commuters in the Island city of Mumbai.
With power demand soaring due to the sultry summer, areas like Girgaon, Dongari, Lalbaug, Dadar, and Antop Hill have been facing frequent power outages, inconveniencing residents. PTI KK NSK
