Kolkata, May 1 (PTI) The authorities of Kolkata Metro Railway have signed an MoU with the IIT-Madras for undertaking collaborative research and development in the field of linear induction motor-based
propulsion systems for metro rail applications, an official said on Friday.
The objective of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) is to examine the technical feasibility, operational performance and lifecycle cost implications of LIM technology under Indian conditions.
The collaboration envisages a pilot project involving the retrofit of a Metro motor coach to facilitate field-level validation and generation of operational data, a Kolkata Metro Railway spokesperson said.
The study will also assess the suitability of LIM (linear induction motor) systems for specific corridor conditions, including alignments with tighter curves and steeper gradients, he said.
This initiative is expected to contribute towards strengthening indigenous capabilities in advanced urban rail technologies and promote innovation-driven development in the Metro rail sector.
The outcomes of the project will support evidence-based decision-making for the potential adoption of alternative propulsion systems in future Metro projects across the country. PTI SUS BDC
