Konkan Railway celebrated the 77th Republic Day with great enthusiasm and patriotic fervour, paying tribute to the spirit of India’s Constitution and the nation’s ongoing journey of progress. On the occasion,
Santosh Kumar Jha, Chairman & Managing Director, Konkan Railway, unfurled the National Flag and inspected the Railway Protection Force (RPF) contingent at Konkan Rail Vihar, Nerul, Navi Mumbai.
Addressing the gathering of employees and their families, Santosh Kumar Jha, Chairman and Managing Director, extended his warm wishes on the occasion of Republic Day. He lauded the dedicated and consistent efforts of Konkan Railway’s workforce, whose commitment has been instrumental in driving the organisation’s growth and service excellence. He also highlighted several notable achievements of the Corporation in the past year. Some of the key milestones are listed below:
Konkan Railway recorded a net profit of ₹137.69 crore in the financial year 2024–25 and received a ‘Very Good’ rating from the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE). So far, projects worth over ₹9,400 crore have been secured, covering a wide range of works including electrification and commissioning of substations, construction of Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and Foot Over Bridges (FOBs), maintenance of Vande Bharat trains at coach care complexes, upgradation of workshop depots, development of rake examination facilities, supply of diesel locomotives, interlocking of level crossing gates, and infrastructure and land development works.
Following the completion of the USBRL project, Konkan Railway has taken over its integrated maintenance, valued at ₹952 crore. Maintenance of Engineering, Signalling & Telecommunication, and Electrical systems commenced on 1 January.
Considering the increase in passenger traffic, Konkan Railway is continuously upgrading passenger amenities across its network. At Udupi station, the covered shed and platform surfacing on Platform No. 1 have been completed and inaugurated, while lift installation is underway. Lift works are also in progress at Sawantwadi, Mangaon and Rajapur stations, and comprehensive upgradation including covered sheds, platform surfacing and lift facilities is being provided on all platforms at Ratnagiri station.
Platform extension works are nearing completion at Mangaon, Karanjadi, Kankavli, Thivim, Bhatkal and Padubidri stations, while new platforms are being constructed at Goregaon, Gokarna and Kumta, along with a Foot Over Bridge at Gokarna. Air-conditioned lounge facilities are planned at several stations including Kankavli and Kudal.
To enhance passenger information and convenience, “Trains at a Glance” boards have been installed at Chiplun, Thivim and Udupi stations, and a new coach guidance system has been introduced on Platform No. 2 at Madgaon.
During the last half of 2025, Konkan Railway recorded robust operational performance across freight and passenger segments. A total of 3,185 freight trains were operated, marking a 12 per cent increase over the corresponding period of the previous year. Passenger operations also witnessed steady growth, with 10,367 passenger trains operated during the period, reflecting a 3 per cent increase over last year. To meet the heavy festive demand during Ganpati festival 2025, Konkan Railway operated 381 special trains, the highest since the inception of the KRCL section facilitating the travel of 11.55 lakh passengers.
Adhering to the principle of “Safety First, Last and Always,” Konkan Railway continued to strengthen its safety framework through focused initiatives. Six safety seminars were conducted during the period, including two at the Corporate Office for the first time, along with 34 safety drives. The Disaster Management Plan–2025 was released and circulated across field units. Crew welfare was enhanced through family counselling sessions at Madgaon and Ratnagiri, including a special interaction led by the Chairman & Managing Director, emphasising rest, stress management and work–life balance. Joint mock drills were also conducted at Ratnagiri and Karwar in coordination with Civil Defence, NDRF and Fire Services, supported by wide dissemination of safety booklets and pictorial hand-signal pamphlets.
Konkan Railway has made significant strides in electrification, energy efficiency and technological upgradation. Nearly 90 per cent of train operations have been shifted to electric traction, resulting in fuel cost savings of approximately ₹130.46 crore over the last six months. The commissioning of the Karwar Traction Sub-Station has enabled transfer of 50 per cent load from Balli TSS, yielding annual savings of about ₹2 crore, while shifting of the neutral section at Kharepatan has facilitated smoother train operations. A modern combined crew lobby was inaugurated at Ratnagiri, along with the launch of an AI-based Measurement Recording Unit (MRU) for real-time OHE monitoring, predictive maintenance and enhanced safety. Renewable energy initiatives also gained momentum, with solar plants of 659 kWp capacity generating 1.93 lakh units during the period, resulting in savings of ₹23.15 lakh, while additional solar power plants are under implementation at Thivim, Madgaon and Udupi.
Konkan Railway launched the new KR Mirror Mobile app on iOS and Android, offering passengers real-time travel information, women-centric safety features, freight business updates, and accessibility features for differently-abled travellers.
Konkan Railway received a total of seven awards from various organisations, bringing its overall tally to 20. Additionally, KRCL reached the Order of Merit stage in the prestigious SKOCH Awards and advanced to the final round, highlighting its commitment to excellence and innovation.
Konkan Railway has been consistently excelling in the implementation of the Official Language, earning recognition at multiple levels. The organisation was conferred the Rajbhasha Kirti Award for the tenth time and the NARAKAS Rajbhasha Samman Award for the seventh time by NARAKAS, Navi Mumbai, where Konkan Railway has successfully managed operations for the past eight years. In addition, for its outstanding work in implementing the Official Language during 2024, Konkan Railway was presented with the Railway Minister’s Official Language Running Trophy by Satish Kumar, Chairman and CEO, Railway Board, at Rail Bhavan, Ministry of Railways.
As part of the Republic Day celebrations, Konkan Railway organised photography and rangoli competitions, encouraging enthusiastic participation from employees and their families. The winners were felicitated during the Republic Day celebration, adding to the festive spirit of the occasion. Similar Republic Day programmes were also organised in the Ratnagiri and Karwar regions, reflecting the collective pride and unity of the Konkan Railway family across its network. On this auspicious occasion, Smt. Manisha Jha, President of the Konkan Railway Women’s Cultural & Social Service Association (KRWC & SSA), extended her warm Republic Day greetings. Highlighting the achievements of the Association and its commendable efforts in promoting education through the award of scholarships to deserving students, thereby reaffirming Konkan Railway’s strong commitment to social responsibility and community welfare.
