Navi Mumbai: In a decisive move to recover dues and curb water theft, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has launched a large-scale crackdown on water bill defaulters and illegal connections
in the Ghansoli division.
Major Action Against Defaulters and Water Theft
Over the past week, the civic body’s Water Supply Department disconnected a total of 247 water connections — 90 belonging to defaulters and 157 identified as illegal.
The action follows strict directives from the NMMC administration, which has been grappling with mounting unpaid water bills and unauthorised tapping into the municipal supply.
977 Consumers Served Notices Over Unpaid Dues
According to officials, 977 consumers in Ghansoli with arrears exceeding Rs 10,000 were served notices after failing to clear their April–May 2025 bills by the July 31 deadline.
“This drive is not just about revenue recovery, but also about ensuring fair access to water for all citizens,” said a senior NMMC officer, stressing that non-payment and illegal tapping directly affect supply and pressure in the network.
Hidden Pipelines and Unauthorised Diversions Found
The crackdown is being carried out by a dedicated enforcement team that has been inspecting residential, commercial, and industrial premises. Officials revealed that many illegal connections were found hidden underground or illegally diverted to multiple properties, depriving legitimate consumers of their fair share.
Drive to Continue Until Full Compliance
The civic body has made it clear that the campaign will continue until all outstanding dues are recovered and every unauthorised connection is dismantled. In addition to disconnections, the NMMC is also considering imposing penalties on offenders to deter future violations.

Residents and business owners in Ghansoli have been urged to settle their pending bills immediately to avoid disruption. “We are committed to maintaining an equitable and sustainable water distribution system,” the official added, warning that further delays in payment will result in strict action without exceptions.
