In a major infrastructure update for Maharashtra, the National Highways Authority of India, NHAI, has revived the long discussed Package 18 of the JNPT Spur corridor, a critical missing link that promises
to connect the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway directly with the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.
The development was shared by Infra News India on X, sparking fresh excitement among infrastructure enthusiasts and daily travellers who have long awaited smoother road connectivity between the country’s financial capital and its surrounding industrial belt.
The proposed stretch, measuring 9.464 km, will be an eight lane greenfield access controlled road connecting Morbe to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. Though relatively short in distance, the package carries massive significance in improving seamless travel and freight movement between two of India’s busiest highway corridors.
A Project That Refused To Disappear
Interestingly, this is not the first time the project has resurfaced. The earlier alignment of Package 18 had reportedly been merged with the Virar-Alibaug Multi Modal Corridor being developed by MSRDC. That move had left many wondering whether the direct JNPT Spur connection would quietly disappear from the roadmap altogether.
Now, with NHAI introducing a revised alignment, hopes have been rekindled once again.
For thousands of commuters, transport operators and logistics companies, the project could eventually mean fewer bottlenecks and more direct movement between Navi Mumbai, Pune and the Delhi Mumbai Expressway network.
Land Acquisition Remains The Real Test
While the revival has generated optimism, road watchers believe the next challenge lies in swift land acquisition and speedy tender approvals. Infrastructure projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region often face delays due to land related hurdles, despite ambitious timelines on paper.
Still, the fact that the package is back on the table has given many commuters a reason to believe that one of Maharashtra’s most important missing road links may finally move towards reality.
