US Shutdown: The US Senate has taken a crucial step towards ending the longest government shutdown in history, voting to advance a measure that would reopen
the federal government after 40 days. The vote came after a critical group of eight Senate Democratic centrists reached a deal with Senate GOP leaders and the White House to reopen the government in exchange for a future vote on extending enhanced Affordable Care subsidies, CNN reported.
US Shutdown: What's next?
According to CNN, there is more to come before the government can reopen. Any one senator can delay consideration of the package for several days, plus the House will have to return and adopt the deal struck in the Senate before it gets sent to President Donald Trump’s desk.
Major airlines announce flight reductions
On Sunday, several major airlines are reducing their flights to the United States. According to CNN, thousands of flights within, to, or from the United States were canceled on Sunday, according to flight tracking site FlightAware. These cancellations were partly due to a 4 per cent reduction in scheduled flights by the Federal Aviation Administration, which was further complicated by a shortage of air traffic control personnel.
Trump on Government Shutdown
As the US Senate inches closer to the end 40-day federal shutdown. US President Donald Trump gave his reaction, saying, "Looks like we're getting very close from the shutdown."
He further added that, "We'll never agree to give any substantial money or any money to real prisoners, illegals that come into our country. And I think the Democrats understand that. And it looks like we're getting close to the shutdown ending"
